In January 2016, having completed training by Malamulele Onward as a parent facilitator, Jennifer started her daycare centre for children with disabilities. At the end of June 2016, the Rethabile Centre was operating as a registered NPO from a local school in Jennifer’s village and had 50 children attending. The parents involved had raised R2000 towards purchasing their land from the local Chief and still needed to raise a further R2000 before the land was theirs.
Today, the land has been paid for and belongs to the Rethabile Centre, while building plans for the centre are in the process of being approved. With 50 children currently attending, the centre is running well and receives full support from the local community, the teachers, hospital staff and other parents. There are currently ten parents including Jennifer working together to run the centre and they each contribute money towards the groceries and transport for the children each month. Despite the busyness of the centre Jennifer and Princess are still actively running workshops, and all parents involved with the centre attend their monthly appointments with their children. The children also receive therapy once a month at the centre provided by a therapist from Tintswalo Hospital.
With the help of her community, Jennifer continues to raise the support necessary to grow the centre. She has invited the senior staff members from the hospital to visit the centre so that they can observe and learn what is taking place there each day. The purpose of this visit is to involve the hospital management in the building of the centre, now that it has its land.
Some employees from Old Mutual also visited the centre to see where they could help and as a result donated R5000. The teachers from the school then helped Jennifer apply for support from the local Government Feeding Scheme in the form of donating groceries on a monthly basis.
Jennifer has established herself as a leader in her community and is managing to make her centre work with minimal resources. Her success lies in her ability to get other people motivated and active in joining her dream of creating solutions for other parents in her community.
